Jim Marshall

Secretary Treasurer

 Jim Marshall

Jim Marshall joined the IAMAW in 1967 as soon as his probationary period ended with McDonnell Douglas. Jim was hired as a Mechanic-Electrical & Radio. In 1968, Jim joined the US Army and served his country overseas until 1970. Upon returning to St. Louis, Jim was placed in lay-off status by the McDonnell Douglas Company. In 1977, Jim was re-hired at MDC and realized the importance of keeping his Union strong.

Marshall fully realized the power of a united Union and knew that it took involvement to keep it strong. Rather than sit on the sidelines and let others do the work, Jim found a wide variety of ways to serve the membership. As a member of Local Lodge 837 C, Marshall began as a member of the By-Laws Committee where he worked to strengthen the governing document of the Lodge to better the membership. Jim went on to serve as Lodge C Recording Secretary, Vice-President, and President. After the Local Lodge merged with 837 A, Jim was again elected to serve as A Lodge Vice-President.

During that time, Marshall represented the membership as a Shop Steward for 14 years. In 1995, Jim was elected to serve the District as a Business Representative and held that position for almost 5 years. When the District President asked Jim to become the District Secretary Treasurer, he did not hesitate to take on that challenging new role.

As Secretary Treasurer, Marshall has the responsibility and duties of the combined offices of Financial Secretary and Treasurer. He is one of the Executive Officers of the District. His prime responsibility is to oversee the finances of the District, record keeping, and filing of required State and Federal reports. He makes expenditures when properly drawn against the District funds. All checks will be signed by him and counter signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the District (President and Directing Business Representative).

Since accepting the call to serve, Jim has worked diligently to make the District financially sound, in spite of decreasing membership. Seeing the tough times ahead, Jim investigated many cost cutting measures that would have the least negative impact for the Rank and file members. He has proposed many changes for Delegate Body review and approval that is keeping the District on firm financial ground.

In addition to his normal duties, Marshall also serves the Trade Unionist of Missouri by serving as 2nd Vice-President for the Missouri State Council of Machinists. Jim values education as a resource to help serve the membership. He has completed Leadership School I and II and Advanced Leadership, Arbitration Training, Political Training, and Financial Officers Training at the IAM’s William Winpisinger Education & Technology Center in Hollywood, Maryland. Marshall also completed Negotiations Training at the University of Wisconsin and a College Credited Labor Law Course at Maryville College.
